The GTA bill was a stop-gap measure. Other than lining the pockets of the foreign Nepalis, giving them more power and furthering the marginalisation of Bengalis and role of West Bengal Govt in the hills it did not achieve much.

Letter to Trade Union leaders to change the date of their proposed general strike on 21st February 2013, 'Bhasha Sahid Diwas' or International Mother language Day

21st February is a sacred day for all Bengalis. On this day four of our brave sons laid their lives in order to protect their matribhasha. Their sacrifice is now commemorated as ‘Bhasha Sahid Diwas’ on both sides of the border and internationally as ‘International Mother Language Day’. As bengalis we are proud of this day. However, this year trade union leaders have decided to observe a general strike on that day. This is an insult to all Bengalis and the memory of the glorious martyrs. We, Bangla O Bangla Bhasha Banchao Committee appeal to all left trade unions to kindly change the date of the general strike

THE TIMES OF INDIA

JALPAIGURI: A day after the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) announced its plan to re-launch the separate statehood demand, the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parshad (ABAVP) on Thursday set the stage for another round of political tension by declaring that the former won’t be allowed to bring their Gorkhaland demand to the Dooars and Terai region.

“If leaders from the Hills try to enter the plains, which is rightfully ours, unmatched violence will erupt. We won’t spare anyone,” warned Birsa Tirkey, president of ABAVP’s Bengal chapter, on Thursday. The tribal body will hold a two-day meeting, starting January 19, at Nagrakata and decide their course of action to counter the GJM moves. “We’ll make the official declaration of our stand on January 20,” Tirkey told TOI.

It is learnt that the GJM’s denial to accept the Shyamal Sen panel report has left the ABAVPleaders fuming. “According to the report, only five mouzas were given to GTA in addition to the three subdivisions of the Darjeeling Hills. But when the GJM refused to accept it, the state again formed a committee to revise the report. Tribals can raise their voice if the Nepalis can,” Tirkey said.

Outfits like Bangla-O-Bangla Bhasa Bachao Committee, Aamra Bangali and Jana Jagaran have also started raising voice against GJM’s decision to re-launch movement.

“Telangana and Darjeeling issie are never the same. In Telangana the agitators are sons of the soil whereas in Darjeeling the agitators are Nepalis, i.e., they originate from Nepal. When in 1835 the king of Sikkim presented the British empire with Darjeeling, at that time there were only 100 Lepchas in Darjeeling. Lepchas are the true residents of Darjeeling and not the Nepali speaking population. We will not allow an inch of soil to be a part of Gorkhaland state,” said Mukunda Mazumdar, secretary of Bangla O Bangla Bhasa Bachao Committee.

We demand an immediate withdrawal of the GTA bill

The GTA bill is a total failure. It has been a stop gap means to appease the foreign Nepalis- both financially and politically. Politics of appeasement have led to nothing. The foreign Nepalis need to be identified and pushed back to Nepal. We demand an immediate abrogation of the unfair Indo-Nepal Treaty of 1950 and the withdrawal of the GTA
